Impacts of Cybercrime on Individuals

  • Cybercriminals can create malware to steal our information online. They can collect and steal personal information through our computers, smartphones or social media accounts.
  • Once sufficient information is collected, they can launch a cyber attack against us by using our online identities and personal information.
  • When hackers take over our online identities and accounts, we can become victims of the criminal or illegal activities that these cyber-criminals commit under the guise of our identities, using our names.

Example

  • 2017 - WannaCry worm hit systems at Tiong Bahru Plaza and White Sands
  • Shops' digital signages were infected but no sensitive info in the mall directories were leaked
  • Hackers did not receive any money or bitcoin
  • Although no shoppers' data were stolen, ransomware attacks can give rise to identity theft or fraud
