Dialysis

Carried out in people who have kidney failure, due to either severe infection or accident. Their kidneys are unable to excrete metabolic wastes.

• Dialysis fluid has same concentration as plasma
• Membrane of dialysis tubing is partially permeable
• Urea diffuse from blood to fluid
• The tubing is narrow, long and coiled to increase the surface area to volume ratio
  • Speeds up the rate of exchange of substances between the blood and the bathing fluid
• Dialysis fluid moves in opposite direction of blood
