Series vs Parallel
Series | Parallel |
---|---|
Current at every point is the same | Sum of current in the separate branches is equal to the current from the source |
Sum of potential differences is equal to the potential difference across the whole circuit | Potential difference across each branch is the same |
The component with the largest resistance has the highest potential difference across it | The component with the lowest resistance has the highest current flowing through it |
- Disadvantage of a Series Circuit
- If a break occurs anywhere in the circuit, current will stop flowing through the entire circuit
- Advantage of a Parallel Circuit
- If a break occurs in one of the parallel branches in the circuit, current will still flow in other parallel branches
