Series vs Parallel

SeriesParallel
Current at every point is the sameSum of current in the separate branches is equal to the current from the source
Sum of potential differences is equal to the potential difference across the whole circuitPotential difference across each branch is the same
The component with the largest resistance has the highest potential difference across itThe component with the lowest resistance has the highest current flowing through it
  • Disadvantage of a Series Circuit
    • If a break occurs anywhere in the circuit, current will stop flowing through the entire circuit
  • Advantage of a Parallel Circuit
    • If a break occurs in one of the parallel branches in the circuit, current will still flow in other parallel branches
