• Italy invaded Abyssinia in 1935
• League attempted to ban the sale of arms, rubber and metals to Italy
  • Not very harsh -> not much effect
• BR and France entered secret negotiations to resolve the conflict
• Emperor of Abyssinia forced to flee and appealed to the League in 1936
  • BR and France unwilling to get involved militarily
  • Feared to make an enemy of Italy and its leader, Mussolini
  • Feared embargo will cause alliance between Mussolini and Hitler
    • Abyssinia conquered by Italy
      • Italy left the League in 1937
  • Hitler and Mussolini still signed Rome-Berlin Axis
