Magnetic and Non-magnetic Materials
Magnetic Materials | Non-magnetic Materials | |
---|---|---|
Attraction by magnet | Yes | No |
Magnetism | Can be magnetised | Cannot be magnetised |
Examples | Cobalt, Iron, Nickel, and alloys based on these metals | Wood, Copper, Aluminium, Brass, and Glass |
Magnetic Material
- Millions of atoms arrange themselves in groups (magnetic domains)
- Their magnetic effects cancel out when unmagnetised
- A group of atomic magnets pointing in the same direction is called a magnetic domain
- When magnetised, they are arranged so that they all point in the same direction
- When all the magnetic domains are pointing in the same direction, the magnet is said to be magnetically saturated and cannot be any stronger
